Sunday scouting report
Wandered the FedExField turf for a bit, gleaning some bits and pieces as to what we might expect a few hours hence. Here's what I hear: The Bucs will employ scramble packages almost entirely for first-time starting QB Josh Johnson. This guy ran a 4.53 40-yard dash at the scouting combine in 2008 and the Redskins know how quick and fast he is. They only had a handful of snaps to look at from last week's game against the NY Giants and fewer than 40 from preseason. Hard to understand how they could have looked so hard at Luke McCown and Byron Leftwich in training camp, then ditched both so quickly for Johnson. Redskins need a disciplined rush with ends keeping contain and pressure up the middle, possibly by blitz. When the Skins have the ball, they want to run between the tackles, where Tampa has been vulnerable. Bucs have quick linebackers but undersized so Washington's o-line needs to get to the second level and cream the little guys. Clinton Portis (calf) will go and the Redskins need him to go hard. ... Redskins will only have seven o-linemen active again. Need to stay healthy up front. ... That's it for now.
