Grounded for the Jets

QB Donovan McNabb (ankle) and FB Mike Sellers (knee) won't play Friday night against the New York Jets in the Redskins' third preseason game. Neither practiced on Wednesday. They were joined on the sidelines by WR Malcolm Kelly (hamstring) and rookie TE/FB Dennis Morris (knee).

McNabb, hurt in the loss to the Baltimore Ravens, has his left ankle wrapped. "Still sore," coach Mike Shanahan said. "He's walking on the treadmill. He won't play in this game." The injury is severe enough that it would have kept McNabb out of a regular-season game, Shanahan added.

McNabb has completed less than half of his pass attempts and has a passer rating of 71.2 through two games. Coaches like to give their starters more work in the third preseason game and then reduce the load considerably in the final one but Shanahan is resigned to going without McNabb.

"You'd like everybody to play in the third preseason game because there's some game-planning," he said. "But what can you do with injuries?"
