Bye, bye Bugel

Long-time offensive line coach Joe Bugel announced his retirement today at noon at a news conference at Redskins Park. Bugel, 69, coached the Redskins offensive line from 1981-89 and created the nickname "The Hogs" for his grubby band of superb blockers. The Redskins went to three Super Bowls and won two while Bugel was on staff. He was later head coach of the Arizona Cardinals and the Oakland Raiders and coached the San Diego Chargers offensive line from 1998-2001 before retiring. "You learn that the grass ain't always greener," he said of his original departure from the Redskins. He was lured back to Ashburn in 2004 when Joe Gibbs returned as head coach and now he exits once more. Class guy, great coach, one of the true coaches in the sense that he not only innovated but motivated. A number of his current players lined the front row of the auditorium and took pictures with Bugel -- that group included Chris Samuels, Randy Thomas, Derrick Dockery and Mike Williams. Among his former charges present were George Starke, Raleigh McKenzie and Doc Walker. Buges plans to spend time with his family at homes in Phoenix and Coranado, Ca. He will be missed and we wish him all the best.
